“Dear John” is an American movie released on February, 5 2010 adapted from Nicholas Sparks’ novel which was the #1 New York Times Bestseller. Starred by Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried, and directed by Lasse Hallstrom, this film becomes the first film to break up Avatar’s box office reign at number one at the US box office and goes on grossing $80 million in the US theatrically.
Special Forces Army Sergeant John Tyree (Channing Tatum) is home on two-week leave from Germany. He meets Savannah Curtis (Amanda Seyfried) after he dives into the sea to retrieve Savannah’s purse that had fallen off the pier. John is smitten by Savannah and falls in love at the first sight. Savannah is a college student and she is on spring break. Moreover, she is helping build a house for Habitat for Humanity. John joins in with Savannah to help build the house. Along the way a romance occurs, and Savannah falls deeply in love with John. As she is about to go back to college and John has to go back into service, they decide they will write a letter to each other and keep no secrets until he returns to her after completing his enlistment. Although Savannah knows that John have to leave for the army for one year, their love still lives.
One year left, John is very excited to come home to Savannah. However, due to 9/11 attack, John feels the duty to reenlist in the Army. Their love is put to the test when john re-enlist after the 9/11 attack. Troubles invade and their love put on hold. After years away from each other, Savannah writes John another letter. In that letter, she says that she has engaged. John gets mad and decides to reenlist again. He wants to make it a career. He sees Savannah one day and finds out that she’s married Tim and has been living with Tim and his son, Alan, who suffers from autism. John is very surprised and disappointed. He asks Savannah why she did not give any explanation except that letter. Then, he knows that Tim gets cancer and he needs Savannah’s help to take care of Alan. Although she’s married, she still loves John. She promises John that she’ll see him soon, then.
